Common Causes of Boiler Repair and Breakdowns

Boiler RepairHaving trouble with your central heating system? Let B.H.S talk you through the common issues we hear from our communities around Belfast and Northern Ireland. Your heating and hot water are completely dependent on your boiler, this makes it the nerve centre of your home. Choose to neglect it could result in needing a boiler repair or a new boiler installation. Be Warm, Be Safe.

No Heating or Hot Water

Have you found yourself in the unfortunate state of no heat or hot water, this could be caused by a few things airlocks, failure of motorised valves, thermostat issues, or low water levels. All these problems can be resolved, B.H.S can carry out boiler repairs on any central heating systems and ensure your home is warm again in no time.

Radiators Don’t Heat Up

Are your radiators not heating or are only heating up at the bottom? This is because of a build-up of air, rust in the pipes, or possibly even a fault with the pump. Belfast Heating Services recommend you try bleeding your radiators, and if that doesn’t improve things you may need a power flush, if this is the case call B.H.S on 02895 219 226.

If some of your radiators are not getting hot at all but others are lukewarm, they will need balancing. This involves adjusting the valves on all of your radiators to ensure they are all getting enough hot water. You can try this yourself, or call in B.H.S to help you.

If balancing your radiators does not work, you may have a problem with sludge building up and stopping hot water getting to some of your radiators. This can be resolved by a professional and involves chemically cleaning or flushing the system. Our power flushing experts can have your radiators piping hot again and we will bring the warmth back into your home again.

Boiler Turns Off

Your boiler could turn off due to low water pressure, a frozen condensate pipe, air in the system, a faulty pump or even problems with the thermostat.

If you encounter this problem in the winter, you may need to thaw your condensate pipe. You could also try bleeding your radiators to remove air in the system. If your water pressure is low is may be because of work going on in your area, so you could also check this before going any further.

Pilot Light Keeps Going Out

The pilot light may keep going out because of a faulty thermocouple stopping the gas supply, a draught blowing out the pilot light, a deposit build-up, or damaged seals. You may want to check that there are no problems with your gas supply, for example if the gas valve is on but the boiler is not receiving gas. If none of your other gas appliances are working you should contact your gas supplier. Otherwise, you can try relighting the pilot light yourself – just follow the instructions in your boiler’s manual carefully. If all else fails, contact a Gas Safe registered engineer from Belfast Heating Services and let our boiler repair specialists look after your heating.

Noisy Boiler or Central Heating

Central heating and boilers can make all sorts of strange noises such as banging and gurgling. If you hear a rumbling noise which sounds a little like a kettle boiling, this is called kettling, and it happens when there is a build-up of lime scale that restricts the flow of water in the heat exchanger. This can cause the water to overheat and steam or boil, and that’s what causes the kettle-like noises. Kettling causes your boiler to have to work harder, which can shorten your system’s lifespan.

Air in the system is also a common cause of noise. You can remove lime scale and air by bleeding your radiator or power flushing your pipes. If the problem persists, it’s best to call in Belfast Heating Services and let us repair the damage.

Thermostat Not Working Properly

Thermostats deteriorate over time, so if yours is a little on the old side it could be the cause of problems in your central heating system.

If the thermostat is no longer accurate or doesn’t turn the heating on or off when it should, it may be time to get a new one. But first, check that it is in the on position and that the time and schedule settings are correct. B.H.S can replace your old thermostat and bring you into the 21st century.

Boiler Leaks or Drips

Boiler leaks could be caused by lose connections or broken parts inside the boiler, such as the pump seal or pressure valve. The boiler pressure may be too high, or the pump seal may need replacing. If there is a leak around the pipes or the tank you may be dealing with corrosion or a system that hasn’t been fitted properly. Whatever the cause of a leak, you’ll need a B.H.S professional for this one to carry out a boiler repair – don’t try to fix a leaking gas boiler yourself. Be Warm, Be, Safe.

Boiler is Losing Pressure

If your boiler is losing pressure, this could be caused by a water leak or it could be a problem with the expansion vessel. If you’re feeling confident, you may be able to re-pressurise the boiler yourself by following the instructions in your manual. Otherwise, leave it to Belfast Heating Services and let our boiler repair experts complete the task safely and cost effectively.
